What are non-Western approaches to managing for the public good? Learn more about the Case of Moroccan zawāyā: a Way of Governing in the Semi-Shadow of the Global West in the upcoming 'Centre for African Smart Public Value Governance' Lecture (www.c4sp.org) on the 6th of December 2023.

    Topic:

Western ascendancy on defining (good) governance has been increasingly in question. Surviving non-Western traditional forms of governance, despite not receiving much attention, pose an obvious alternative. This study analyses key indigenous institutions in Morocco known as zawāyā, filling some of the lacunae on Islamic-African public administration. Drawing from novel data collected via ethnographic fieldwork across three domains of public service provision, the speakers Salah Chafik and Wolfgang Drechsler present a public administration that is functional in its operation, delivering on its goals, and on both counts markedly different from the global-Western mainstream. The speakers uncover a public administration that (1) coexists with a larger state, (2) delivers co-produced services, and (3) merits recognition.
