  • 1.  Campus Sustainability Day 3.0

    Apologies for any cross postings.

In a message to IABS-L, Denis Collins wrote:

I've just been elected to chair a newly formed "green campus" committee. The committee will develop a list of indicators for benchmarking purposes.

I am familiar with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which certifies "green buildings." I am also aware that the Unitarian Universalists have a green sanctuary certification process that includes broader indicators.

By any chance is there a "Green Campus" certification process for colleges and universities? If so, I can't find it on the internet. If there isn't, there should be! :)

    Any leads would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Denis

Right below Denis' message in my inbox was a message (see bleow) about a telecast on campus sustainability sponsored by the Society for Campus and University Planning, to be held October 26, 2005.  We viewed and taped the telecast two years ago here at WIU and it was useful.  Other useful resources for those interested in campus greening include the following organizations:

University Leaders for a Sustainable Future http://www.ulsf.org
Education for Sustainability - Western Network  http://www.efswest.org  (they hold a conference every other year -- next one in fall 2006 at Arizona State U.)
    Second Nature  http://www.secondnature.org/
Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)  http://www.aashe.org/
National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program  http://www.nwf.org/campusecology/
Ball State University holds an excellent Greening the Campus conference in September of odd numbered years;   http://www.bsu.edu/provost/ceres/greening/index.html

While there is a tremendous amount of activity in the area of campus sustainability, including the hiring of sustainability coordinators by many universities, to my knowledge there is not a green campus certification comparable to the LEED certification for buildings, or a Rugmark or Forest Stewardship Council certification for products.  I'm also involved in our campus sustainability efforts, and will be glad to speak with anyone else who is interested in this area.

[ ] Please share this information with colleagues
on your campus and elsewhere by forwarding it.

[ ] It's time to get signed up, find a room,
and invite colleagues from all over campus!

    http://www.scup.org/csd/3/ <--------------------------------------------

SCUP's 2-hour webcast stands alone as great programming for anyone on
campus - students, faculty, staff - across all departments and disci-
plines. It's an inexpensive way to bring those people together, sponsor-
ed by your department, center, group, or even by external vendors of
products and services. You can watch and listen to it by yourself, but
    we'd prefer that you didn't!

    http://www.scup.org/csd/3/ <--------------------------------------------

This year's program is: "A SIX-PACK (RECYCLED, OF COURSE) OF
SUSTAINABILITY LESSONS FROM THE PAST YEAR IN HIGHER EDUCATION" and
features renowned NPR science correspondent Joe Palca as the moderator.
He will engage with five additional presenters, each of whom will bring
you the meaty parts of five different higher education conferences in
the past year: So you didn't have to attend them and burn all that jet
    fuel.

    http://www.scup.org/csd/3/ <--------------------------------------------

We encourage folks on campus to arrange other activities around the
webcast - like a panel discussion afterwards, or poster displays by
groups on campus who are doing great things relating to sustainability.

    http://www.scup.org/csd/3/ <--------------------------------------------

All you need is a computer with Internet connectivity for visual and a
telephone line for audio; no special software or plug-ins are required.
Of course, if you put on the kind of event SCUP hopes you will around
this, you may also need a data projector and a very loud speakerphone!
You can also order a DVD for use afterwards, or if you cannot make the
live, interactive webcast date and time.

    http://www.scup.org/csd/3/ <--------------------------------------------

The conferences and presenters acting as correspondents from each are:

Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education

For those interested in greening the campus I would strongly recommend you
try to find a report by Shirley Ali-Khan for the UK Polytechnics [which
are now Universities]. This was called the Greening of Poyltechnics. It
was written for the Uk Department of Education and Science in about 1993.
Although it was written in the early 1990s it is an incredibly pioneering
report dealing with infrastructure, resouce use, procurement and
    curriculum
    development.

  • 4.  Campus Sustainability Day 3.0

    Posted 09-28-2005 05:53
For anyone interested in tools for measuring sustainability in Higher Education
Institutions that go beyond environmental dimensions of campus greening, Rodrigo
Lozano a Doctoral Student at the BRASS Centre in Cardiff, UK has developed an
excel based graphical assessment tool which follows similar principles to the
GRI - you can find a copy and a worked example at

    Apologies for any cross postings.

In a message to IABS-L, Denis Collins wrote:

I've just been elected to chair a newly formed "green campus" committee.
The committee will develop a list of indicators for benchmarking purposes.

I am familiar with LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design),
which certifies "green buildings." I am also aware that the Unitarian
Universalists have a green sanctuary certification process that includes
    broader indicators.

By any chance is there a "Green Campus" certification process for colleges
and universities? If so, I can't find it on the internet. If there isn't,
    there should be! :)

    Any leads would be helpful.

    Thanks,
    Denis

Right below Denis' message in my inbox was a message (see bleow) about a
telecast on campus sustainability sponsored by the Society for Campus and
University Planning, to be held October 26, 2005. We viewed and taped the
telecast two years ago here at WIU and it was useful. Other useful
resources for those interested in campus greening include the following
    organizations:

University Leaders for a Sustainable Future http://www.ulsf.org
    Education for Sustainability - Western
Network http://www.efswest.org (they hold a conference every other year
-- next one in fall 2006 at Arizona State U.)
    Second Nature http://www.secondnature.org/
Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education
    (AASHE) http://www.aashe.org/
    National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology
    Program http://www.nwf.org/campusecology/
Ball State University holds an excellent Greening the Campus conference in
    September of odd numbered
    years; http://www.bsu.edu/provost/ceres/greening/index.html

While there is a tremendous amount of activity in the area of campus
sustainability, including the hiring of sustainability coordinators by many
universities, to my knowledge there is not a green campus certification
comparable to the LEED certification for buildings, or a Rugmark or Forest
Stewardship Council certification for products. I'm also involved in our
campus sustainability efforts, and will be glad to speak with anyone else
who is interested in this area.

  • 5.  Campus Sustainability Day 3.0

    Posted 09-28-2005 09:07
The GRI requires the reporting of about 50 sustainability indicators and
recommends the use of approximately another 50! Often these indicators are
not directly comparable from campus to campus or between universities.
Furthermore, indicators are RESULTS - the outcomes of performance useful to
those that use them but not necessarily to others that wish to compare
themselves using benchmarking methods. The Baldrige performance model
enables a university (or corporation) to give a single SCORE to represent
ALL of the indicators. In the United States, information on the Baldrige
Model can be accessed at http://www.quality.nist.gov/Education_Criteria.htm
In the European Union the comparable model information can be accessed at
http://www.efqm.org/Default.aspx?tabid=35 About 70 countries currently use
this proven performance model and scoring method. This model allows a
university (or corporation) to score its TRUE performance on a 1000-point
scale. Contrary to popular thought, you do not have to enter an application
in the national award programs to use the models.

Tools for scoring indicators (results) and true performance have been
    published in a new book:
    http://www.blr.com/product.cfm/product/17001600/funcode/WI04 I hope you
will find the tools useful for the purpose of quantitatively measuring the
performance of a university and enabling a direct comparison between
different universities with a single score. Using this scoring method, it
will not be necessary to establish a complicated bureaucracy to rate
universities' sustainability programs. It is also not necessary to have
complicated graphs and Excel scoring sheets.

I have included performance measurement in my course at Harvard. Content
from last spring's class can be found at
