    Posted 11-24-2008 16:25

    Hi,

Does anyone know of a teaching case study on business strategies related to cap and trade systems? I would like to find a case that helps students understand the functioning of Emissions trading systems but also firms strategies related to climate change regulations.

The only case I know is the HBS case Global Climate Change and Emissions Trading but it does not really deal with firm strategies.

    Thanks for your help.

    Best,

    Magali,

While not dealing with carbon emissions, the first edition of Mike Russo's text has an excellent case on the decision The Southern Companies faced regarding whether to buy sulfur dioxide emission permits, install scrubbers, or shift to low sulfur coal. I can't remember whether it is in the 2nd edition or not.

    Hi Magili,

Acid Rain: The Southern Company (A) by Forest Reinhardt is dated (1992), but it's the only case I know of that permits students to cost out various options in a cap and trade system.  It focuses on an electric utility assessing its options under the Clean Air Act.  The link to the case is pasted below.

    Magali,

Forest Reinhardt also put together the BP Amoco case which dealt with internal trading for GHG emissions (I am not sure if this is the same case you mentioned).  It is a small aspect of the case.  It fits in with a broader set of stakeholder issues and BP Amoco's response.  Their internal trading program is more of an operational response to meeting their goals.  But, there are numerous strategic issues they faced.

I am not familiar with any cases dealing with external trading of GHG emissions.

If you do use this case, there is an interesting video that as part of Volume XII McGraw-Hill/Irwin Video Series DVD that is 13 minutes long. It shows how operations in one division actually reduced GHG and made some substantial payback on their efforts.  It is called the "BP Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project".  The video is free if you contact your McGraw-Hill Representative.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Magali,

There's also an HBS case on EcoSecurities, a firm that creates carbon
credits in China and India for sale in Europe.

    Hello,

Jijun Gao and I have written a case study on Suncor and its oil sands operations in Alberta -- a hotspot for greenhouse gas emissions in North America. In the case, Suncor executives must decide whether to push forward with carbon capture and storage (adaptation to climate change). Although emissions trading is not a central aspect of the case study, it does speak to carbon markets and the price of carbon.

The link to the case study is: http://cases.ivey.uwo.ca/Cases/Pages/home.aspx?Mode=showproduct&prod=9B08M073
