  • 1.  Innovation data?

    Posted 07-08-2009 06:11
    Dear all,
For my dissertation research I am looking for data on companies' innovation performance. Preferably an index of some sort. Ideally one that covers a large number of large companies.
The PhD work will combine data on sustainability performance with data on innovation performance (if I can find any, that is) in order to identify companies that are high performers within sustainability and innovation. For the sustainability axis, I am using the data behind the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index.
In terms of innovation data, I am coming up short beyond the European Community Innovation Survey (where it is illegal to trace the results back to the individual companies) and lists of innovative companies such as those provided by Fortune and Fast Companies (which are based on reputation for innovation and cover just a few companies)
Please help if you can. Any and all suggestions will be much appreciated.
Many thanks and I look forward to meeting some of you in Chicago in August,
    Marie

    Marie,

I am a PhD student as well, at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.  I am working on my dissertation too (on VEPs and firm environmental performance), and I recognize how difficult it is to get good data to analyze.  I think your interest in "innovation" is laudable, but many companies guard their advancements (hoping for a first mover advantage, I suspect).  At some point data on R&D expenditure can be a substitute, but with so much directed research today, that can be misleading.

In the US the Center for Innovation Management Studies at the North Carolina State University has been working on a number of analytical approaches in this area, and you may want to contact them if you haven't already.  Here is their web link:

Although it's not a measure of their performance, you could identify which companies include Innovation as one of their corporate values and compare the sustainability performance of the two groups.

Some years ago I created a list of the top 50 innovation companies based on reviewing books in the innovation literature to see which companies were most-often cited and/or included as case studies. After that I tried to interview people in their HR/HRD departments to find out what people processes supported their innovation efforts. This process worked for my purpose at the time, but tech companies were over-represented on the list. I believe that may be true for the Fortune and Fast Company lists as well.

Members of the "Association for Managers of Innovation" (a group established through the Center for Creative Leadership 30 years ago) might have other suggestions. I will send an email to their coordinator and cc you in case someone there can help.

I would be happy to meet you in Chicago to discuss various possibilities as I'm interested in both of these topics myself.
