    Hi all,

I've been asked to speak at the inaugural SC Green Business Expo next month on two topics: funding green business and green marketing. I have some ideas for both, but I'd like to hear suggestions from all of you. Both are structured as hour and a half long panels with either two or three other people. I'm expected to have three deliverables. The target audience, as I understand it, will be representatives of local (mostly small to medium sized) businesses that want to learn more about going green or people looking to start a new green business.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Dear Dave,

Regarding funding sources, I would recommend starting with the DSIRE database (www.dsireusa.org ).  In addition, please check  our Resources page for a list of Funding & Incentives Related to Sustainability ( http://www.sbnca.org/resources.html).  While some of these are specific to our state, you should be able to find similar resources for other states.  You're probably already connected to the Lowcountry Local First BALLE network  in Charleston for additional resources.

    Regards,
    Nancy

    Hello David

I suggest that you check out the website of Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (www.vbsr.org) - the oldest and largest of the state-level business associations of its type.  VBSR caters primarily to small and medium-sized businesses, and I believe that one of the biggest things of value that members have gained from VBSR has been the opportunity to compare notes with fellow businesspersons as they made incremental progress on environmental and social fronts.

Cool, Dave - one thing I think is important to stress is the "entrepreneur" side. You need entrepreneurs to see the seemingly more complicated opportunities (but we know that pretty much all opportunities are multi-faceted). Still, you need to be good at 'hot' cognition (both rational and emotional thinking) & not feel as though you need to be either driven by emotional good-deed-doing or driven by "cool calculations".

If you can show you get the entrep side, you become much more attractive to VCs/angels who are betting on you!  Maybe have VC/angel types on your panel to talk about what they look for and why that does NOT exclude green biz... They don't even have to be focused on cleantech, but those VCs/angels who are would want to attend the expo anyway...
