  • 1.  Experience with Student projects?

    Greetings GRNSCHers and ONEites,

Please excuse the cross posting.  I would appreciate your advice for my course planning.  I am preparing to teach a new course in the spring – Management 225 – Sustainability Management.  I will attach a draft syllabus.  I want one component to be a sustainability oriented project - Component 3 in the syllabus.  Examples of projects include: recycle mania (http://www.recyclemaniacs.org/Index.htm); measuring campus Green House Gas (GHG) emissions; establishing a campaign to sign the President's Climate Commitment;  'adopting' a portion of campus or a nearby road in conjunction with a residence hall or other club;  designing a program leading to a car-free campus; setting up a competition between residence halls to reduce, reuse or recycle (http://www2.aashe.org/competitions/); etc.

Has anyone tried a similar approach?  I would appreciate any advice, critiques or encouragement.  I would be happy to summarize the results of this survey and distribute it to anyone interested.

    Best regards,

    Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

AASHE (the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education) has a list of Courses on Campus Sustainability that might be helpful.  See http://www.aashe.org/resources/campus_sustainability_courses.php .  You might think about sending them a description of your course too once you have it set up.

Also, AASHE offers an annual award for student research on campus sustainability (http://www.aashe.org/programs/student_research_award.php).  You might consider having the students in your class submit their papers for this award.  All submissions are posted online so even if they don't win, their research can help campus sustainability advocates at other schools.

    Best wishes,

    Julian
