    Call for Papers

Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation: An Organizational Science
    Perspective

    January 16th - 21th, 2011
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich (Switzerland)

Climate change is a major issue facing the world in the 21st century.
Drastic reductions of greenhouse gas emissions are crucial for
stabilizing the world's ecosystems. The business sector needs to
mitigate the sources of climate change and adapt to its effects even
while both its magnitude and economic implications are uncertain.
Consequently, the appropriate climate change mitigation and adaptation
becomes a cornerstone of competitive strategy. The PhD-Academy is
centered on these challenges from an organizational science perspective.
The aim of the annual ETH PhD-Academy is to promote excellent
PhD-research in the area of sustainability and technology and to develop
responsible leaders for tomorrow. While the 2011 Academy again focuses
on climate change, it is also open to PhD-students working on similar
challenges with respect to environmental sustainability. The five days
of the Academy concentrate on improving the research design and
methodology of participants' PhD-projects. We invite PhD-students with a
background in strategic management, technology/innovation management, or
institutional change to participate in the Academy. Besides
content-related discussions, students will get valuable feedback from
their peers and three professors with long-standing organizational
    research experience:

Dr. Irene Henriques; Professor at Schulich School of Business, York
University Toronto, Canada; Former chair of Organizations and Natural
    Environment division at AOM

Dr. James P. Walsh; Professor at Ross School of Business, University of
Michigan, US; Current president of the Academy of Management (AOM)

Dr. Volker Hoffmann; Professor for Sustainability and Technology, ETH
    Zurich, Switzerland

Papers should focus on - but are not limited to - the following topics:
    - Organizational strategy in a carbon constrained business environment
    - Clean technologies and innovation strategies
    - Corporate adaptation to climate change
    - Managing the carbon value chain
    - Future development of carbon markets and climate regulations
    - Carbon risk assessment & analysis

To guarantee an intensive learning process, attendance is limited to 15
PhD-students. The tuition fee of EUR 250 per person covers
accommodation, meals, and excursions. Most of the program will take
place in a hotel in the Swiss Alps. Applications should include (i) a
cover letter explaining your motivation for applying, (ii) a proposal
abstract of max. 2 pages, and (iii) a short CV. The deadline for
submission is September 19, 2010. Notification of acceptance will be
given by October 1, 2010. Deadline for full paper (10-15 p): December 1,
    2010.
