I thought people might be interested in an item at the end of a Washington Post article on BP claims payments and stock price -- full article available at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/10/AR2010061000251.html

"Also Wednesday, a group called Earth Economics issued a report valuing the "ecosystem services" of the Mississippi River delta at $12 billion to $47 billion per year. Those services include fishing, recreation and the hurricane protection provided by the delta's coastal marshes. If the delta were for sale, the group found, its value would be between $330 billion and $1.3 trillion.

"David Batker, who helped write the report, said he hoped it would be used to set the amount of damages that BP has to pay for the spill. "BP is looking at a whole factor of damages far larger than simply, 'Let's pay the shrimpers for a year of lost income,' " he said."

The report, completed shortly before the spill (talk about good timing), was probably undertaken largely to demonstrate the value of intact wetlands in lessening the impacts of hurricanes, thus making the case for preserving and restoring them. The press release applying it to the BP spill, as well as the full report, can be found at their website, http://www.eartheconomics.org/

    Hi Gordon,
This link is not turning up the article. Can you tell me the name of the article, and I'll search for it on the Washington post site?

    Thanks a lot.
