    Background and Rationale

We know our planet has limited resources; consuming without consideration challenges those fragile resources and has been subject to scrutiny for several years (Shaw et al, 2015; McDonagh and Prothero, 2014).

This special issue consolidates research on sustainability and responsible consumption (Moraes et al., 2012; Balderjahn et al., 2013) to consider the significance of ethical consumption in the context of sustainability, and to examine how it is being promoted and implemented by organisations, how it is being perceived and received by consumers and the impact it is having on society.

The aim of this special issue is to reflect upon sustainability and ethical consumption research by looking back at its origins, how it developed, where it is now, and what it could or should develop into in the future. In doing so, the editors aim to consolidate extant research in the areas of sustainability and ethical consumption, which will provide future directions for scholars in this area.

In particular, empirical and conceptual papers are invited (but not limited to) the following key concepts and topic areas
    • Consumer responses to corporate sustainable and unsustainable actions
    • Corporate social performance
    • Consumers' moral values and ethical decision making
    • Sustainable consumption
    • Fair trade consumption
    • Charitable giving
    • Organisational and consumer attitudes towards waste, disposal and recycling
    • Cross-cultural attitudes to ethical behaviour and sustainability
    • History of ethical consumption and sustainability
    • Anti-consumption, demarketing, sharing and collaborative consumption
