A colleague suggested that I share with you my response to Arjun's
message from last Friday. This might be useful to those of you who are
developing courses related to sustainability. Additionally, the fifth
point might be of interest to many of you from a research standpoint,
not just pedagogically.
Arjun:
I hope that the following is helpful in developing your course on
'Issues in Business and Society.'
First, WRI has a database of syllabi with social/enviro content on their
website at
http://bell.wri.org/syllabi.cfm. Most of the syllabi are a
bit old, but it's a good start.
Second, Beyond Grey Pinstripes also has a searchable coursework database
at
http://www.beyondgreypinstripes.org/search/search_coursework.cfm. A
simple list of syllabi can be found at
http://www.beyondgreypinstripes.org/about/syllabi.cfm.
Third,
http://www.caseplace.org will be a great place to find cases to
fill in the content once you've chosen your topics. The website also has
a number 'tools and resources' that might be helpful.
Fourth, Net Impact has a curriculum section on their website
(http://www.netimpact.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=318) with
some resources that might be helpful. Unfortunately, you must be a
member to access many of them.
Fifth, you should also be aware of an initiative based at Ivey that is
gaining momentum. It is called The Research Network for Business
Sustainability and it is led by Tima Bansal. The website is
http://www.sustainabilityresearch.org. From the 'teaching resources'
section, you can find links to all of the resources listed above. As the
Network is just being established, it doesn't yet contain many resources
itself. The focus thus far has been on building the list of people
working in sustainability and posting summaries of their current work
(the People and Projects sections).
Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to
join the Network.
Warm regards,
Tom

Subject: Undergraduate Course "Issues in Business and Society"
Hello All,
I am designing a course for (4th year) undergraduate business students
titled "Issues in Business and Society" for which I would like to
include a strong component on sustainable development.
I would like to seek your advice and help for developing this course. I
would also appreciate any sample course outlines or information on
teaching resources that I might be able to use. Thanks!
Warm regards,
Arjun
