Does Green Management Matter in Individual Lives? Incubating Research on the Greening of Careers
Saturday, Aug 8 2009 8:00AM - 10:00AM at Sheraton Chicago in Erie Room
What does it mean to “green” a career? While the popular press has begun asking this, there is relatively little published scholarly work examining this area. Thus far, green career research has focused upon careers with a green emphasis by nature of the content or outcome of the work (e.g. sustainability coordinators, environmental engineers, etc). While this work is very important, some of what we learn from it generates other ideas about how people green their career. Thus, we believe this Academy meeting with its theme of “Green Management Matters” is the perfect setting to explore further aspects of green careers, including both those with green content, but also greening careers in a broader sense. We will first set the stage by sharing what has been published and research in process by panel members exploring green careers. Then we will involve the audience in improvisational exercises to explore where careers and sustainability interrelate. The goal is to broaden the group’s thinking to generate research questions and instigate breakthrough thinking for the next generation of green career research. Finally, we will select a few of the questions proposed and brainstorm ways to approach this question and network within the assembled group to generate teams for undertaking some of these ideas. Our goal is to create new research teams among those in attendance with the excitement and direction to move green career research into the future with the ultimate goal being a special issue about green careers for a journal.
