“We shape our buildings, and thereafter they shape us.” – Winston Churchill

    Dear Academy Colleagues:

You are invited to attend an All-Academy Panel Symposium on “Greening the Built Environment” on Sunday, August 9th at 2:30 PM at the Hyatt Regency in the Toronto room.

    Panelists:
    David Orr, Oberlin College
    Candace Jones, Boston College
    Christine Mondor, evolveEA
    Marilyn Engwall, City of Chicago

The adverse impact of conventional buildings on human health, workforce productivity, the natural environment, and the economy is often underestimated. Buildings consume 40% of the world’s materials, 12% of all freshwater, 40% of the world’s energy and 71% of US electricity. They produce 40% of US non-industrial waste and create 36% of the carbon dioxide emissions that cause climate change.

Despite the ubiquity of buildings in—and their impact on—organizational life, they garner little attention in organizational research. This distinguished and diverse panel from academe, industry, and government will discuss the strategies, relationships, and opportunities inherent in green building. Green building is an emerging area for organizational practice, research and teaching.

We hope that you will be able to join in the discussion of this important aspect of Green Management Matters.

    Kindest Regards,
Linda Forbes, Western Connecticut State U.
    Rebecca Henn, U. of Michigan
