    PhD (2010 – 2013) and Master's (2011) Scholarships

Two scholarships are available to assist and encourage students to pursue a PhD thesis at the University of Waikato, focusing on New Zealand's sustainability positioning in the context of global economic constraint and growing concern about environmental issues such as climate change.

The scholarships are funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand and is part of a Marsden Research Grant awarded to Professor Juliet Roper & Dr Eva Collins at the University of Waikato.

The overall project is entitled "Sustainability at the cross roads: Examining the vulnerability of New Zealand's global environmental positioning".  Within the project there is scope for a range of perspectives to be examined, including political discourses; media commentary (national and international); industry sector discourses, in particular Food & Beverage (including farming) and Tourism; and comparative perspectives from New Zealand's key trading partners such as Australia, the UK, and the USA. Other approaches that fit within the broad objectives of the project can be negotiated.

The PhD scholarship is available to be taken up in 2010.  The Master's scholarship is available in 2011 (start dates negotiable). The study should be undertaken in New Zealand, with students enrolled at The University of Waikato. Applicants must send their CV and a cover letter in which particular research interests are outlined.

Expressions of interest for the PhD scholarship must be received by 1 May 2010.

Applications for the Master's scholarship close December 2010.

The successful PhD scholarship recipient will receive a stipend of $NZ25, 000 per annum and $NZ12, 000 per annum towards the cost of their fees, for a total period of three years. The Master's student would be expected to enroll for a 4 paper equivalent thesis and would receive a stipend of up to $NZ16, 000 and $NZ4, 000 towards fees, over a period of one year.

International PhD students pay the same fees as local students in New Zealand.

Master's students who are Australian citizens pay the same Master's fees as New Zealand students; however, Master's students from other countries such as the U.S.A. would need to pay International student fees.
