The race to vehicular light-weighting is well underway as evidenced by the introduction of the new aluminum-intensive Ford F-150. Alcoa, one of the largest aluminum manufacturers in the world, knows that the competition in the global aluminum market will get tougher with the passage of more stringent corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards in the U.S. This case asks students to find strategies to define and boost Alcoa's value proposition and competitive advantage.
