ORGANIZATIONS & THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT (ONE)

2017 ONE Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

Program Chair:  Jonatan Pinkse, University of Manchester; onedivision.aom@gmail.com

The Academy of Management's ONE division is devoted to research – theory, methods, empirics, and practice – regarding relationships of organizations to the natural environment. Major topics include: corporate sustainability, environmental strategies and performance, sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship, sustainable business models, industrial ecology and the circular economy, green human resource management and organizational behaviour, environmental reporting and carbon disclosure, environmental leadership, green marketing and sustainable consumption, environmental stakeholders and social movements, corporate environmental politics, environmental attitudes and decision making, and international or comparative dimensions of these topics. As the natural environment is integral in all individual, organizational and societal activity, the division encourages holistic, integrative, and interdisciplinary analysis. It promotes joint exploration of these topics with all other disciplines present in the Academy.

The ONE division invites papers and symposia that address all aspects of the relationship between organizations and the natural environment. The ONE division should be able to contribute significantly to the 2017 AOM theme of 'At the Interface'. The ONE division is particularly interested in the interface between organizations and natural systems. In the announcement of the theme for 2017, the Academy described the importance of seeing opportunities in managing this interface with the natural environment:

"Today's Grand Challenges (e.g., aging populations, climate change) increasingly demand large-scale multi-perspective strategies. When the interstitial space is large, organizations may feel greater responsibility to tackle societal issues that are not part of their formal mandate and are unlikely to deliver any immediate benefit to their traditional stakeholders (e.g., employees, customers and investors). But how far can organizations expand their missions before they are rudderless and off course?"

At the Interface is a theme that is at the heart of the ONE Division. The ONE Division encourages submissions that reflect on the question how interface changes with the natural environment lead to new types of firms, novel ways of organizing, and more sustainable business models. In the spirit of the 2017 AOM theme of crossing organizational boundaries, ONE specifically welcomes joint symposium proposals that reflect the natural links with other Academy divisions and interest groups.
