The PDW will examine the topic of organisational resilience to environmental risks. Environmental change, particularly in the form of sudden adverse events, has direct implications and flow-on effects for business activities, leading organisations to confront threats of both asset and profit degradation. Organisational resilience, the capacity to respond, adapt, and transform in the face of such adversity, is increasingly being recognized as an important characteristic for organisations, which can enable them to prepare, recover, and adapt.

This PDW is a chance for interested scholars to get together and discuss, identify, develop, and theoretically and empirically examine important issues in this area.

The PDW will consist of three parts.

In the first part (25 minutes), the organisers will provide an overview of current organisational resilience research in the context of environmental risks and also outline the latest thinking and science behind environmental change, particularly abrupt or irreversible change, and its potential impacts on organisations.

The second part will feature research round-tables (45 minutes), where questions raised by the organisers and participants will be discussed and explored. These may include but are not limited to: What are organisations building resilience to? What contributes to organisational resilience and what are its determinants? How do we measure resilience to environmental risks in organisational research? How do we account for resilience dynamics/phases or for transformative adaptation? How can we examine organisational resilience more comprehensively and in a more interdisciplinary manner?

The final part (20 minutes) will consist of a synthesis discussion and an outline of what participants can expect to receive in terms of post-workshop materials and documentation.

Our goal is that participants will leave the PDW with ideas to generate research projects on this topic and to connect with other scholars working in this area, as well as with actionable resources for studying organisational resilience to environmental risks.

We hope that you will join us!
