    Hi all,

I am requesting some help finding some information.  Ray Anderson talks often about having an epiphany on environmental issues after reading "The Ecology of Commerce."  Does anyone know of a good place where this story of his conversion is described (either the initial conversion or the challenges of acting on it)?  Also, does anyone know of any other stories of people having similar epiphanies?

Please reply to me direectly (ajhoff@umich.edu) and not the whole list serve.

Thanks in advance for any help,
    Andy

I once interviewed the Australian GM of Interface Carpets and have the transcript. He discussed Ray's conversation with staff and also various consultants conversation's with staff. What do you want to know?

    Andy,

I decided to reply to the whole list, in case anyone else is interested in this.

I'm sure that this is addressed in Ray Anderson's book, "Mid-Course Correction:
    Toward a Sustainable Enterprise."

I recently heard him speak in Cleveland, where he told his story.

    Andy,

I studied 8 european company leaders in CSR. Nearly all had the type of
epiphany you talk about for Ray Anderson. That is they faced a number of
problems and challenges that they saw indicated there was something
clearly wrong with their existing [and conventional] business model, which
caused them to embark on root and branch change. The rest of their
stories is the basis for a forthcoming book.

I toured the Dr Marten shoe factorieS near Birmingham in 2000. The owner did not have an epiphany, but was committed to his community from the beginning. He invested in local community groups with not only money, but encouragement. For example, he paid for repairs of local working clubs and then subsidised membership of the club for all employees. Hence, the clubhosue was physically repaired and the dwindling membership was rebuilt so sustainability was truly encouraged.

    Dear Jeff,

    Thank you for the reference.

    Dear Nigel,

This looks really interesting. When will the book be available?

    Dear all,

I am curious about the triggers of such epiphanies. The reading of a book in
Ray Andersson's case? Would you know of cases where other factors are also
described (for instance, pressures from social movements, governments,
distributors)? I am also curious on how we go from personal epiphany to
organizational change. Would you also know of cases where the change process
is well described at the organizational level? Cases in all sectors would be
interesting but for classes I am preparing, I am particularly looking for
cases in the social economy sector (cooperative and non for profit) and in
    the tourism sector.

    Cheers,

    Lionel,

that too was a clear afctor in our study....

The presense of commitment to community activity.
