    Hello Colleagues,

I am searching for studies that give empirical evidence of, and explain how ecological degradation negatively impacts economic growth. Do you know of any academic papers, or government/multi-lateral institutional reports (country-specific or global) that have been published around such a theme that may help me to some degree?

    Thank you,
    Aarti

i don't have any specific pieces to suggest, but it seems to me that the "domestic peripheries" literature in the 1970s and 1980s (ann markusen, jack gaventa, etc.) argued that the ecological degradation in regions of the u.s. like appalachia in the southeast and the upper peninsula of michigan limited the potential of those regions to develop strong tourist industries . . .

steve bunker's work on the amazon showed how the ecological impacts of any given phase of development then conditioned the possibilities for future phases of development . . .

    Jared Diamond's book
_Collapse: How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed_
addresses this theme. I don't have the book in front
of me but I assume the bibliography may have some studies of
    interest.

    Hi Aarti

You might also check out the work by John Gowdy and Carl McDaniel, two professors (in economics and biology) at Rensselaer (RPI) who write a book and I believe several papers on the Island of Nauru and its collapse due to mining. The book is called "Paradise for Sale".

    Hi Aarti,

You may find Clive Ponting's book "A  Green history of the world" ( Penguin Publishers) interesting. It does a great job at linking human /social practices with their ecological impacts as well as the opposite ( reduced ecosystem capacity on human systems). It contains lots of stories, cases, etc... I have used several of them in the classroom.

In addition, The Millennium Assessment provides interesting, solid, recent global findings on that matter. http://www.millenniumassessment.org/en/index.aspx

    Hi Aarti,

If you want to frame it in terms of eco-systems services, try this citation from Nature.  Best, Tom
