Purpose:
This position provides management and strategic direction of the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise under the direction of the Faculty Director in order to develop and deliver global, transformational learning opportunities for students. This is a unique opportunity to manage what Businessweek calls a "world-renowned" sustainability institute. The ideal candidate will: (a) be knowledgeable of business and sustainability issues, (b) be able to interact and engage with students, (c) be able to effectively manage a staff of approximately 5 employees, (d) be sensitive to the special context and stakeholder expectations within the University environment, (e) be able to manage a multi-million dollar budget and (f) be able to create a vision with the Faculty Director and lead the Institute through its next stages of development and growth.

Position Overview:
The Program Director will be responsible for oversight and responsibility for day-to-day affairs of the Institute, performance and cohesiveness of Institute staff, clarity and efficiency of operations, strong relationships with internal and external constituencies, and sound financial management. In consultation with the Faculty Director, develop and refine strategies and programs to achieve the missions and goals of the Institute. Work closely with prospective and existing students to ensure continuous improvement of high-quality educational programming and support services. Provide the leadership to maintain an effective External Advisory Board (EAB), Strategic Advisory Council (SAC) for the benefit of both the Institute and board/council membership. Provide operational and strategic leadership support to the Faculty Director and Associate Directors and associated faculty in carrying out the mission of the Institute.
Duties and Responsibilities:
50% Management of Institute
- Manage the day-to-day operations for all programs and workshops; reinforce a collaborative, learning-oriented, and high-performance culture.
- Interact extensively with other University of Michigan schools, Ross units, SNRE units, students, faculty, corporate recruiters, donors and other internal and external stakeholders to provide seamless delivery of high-quality curricular and co-curricular experiences for Ross and SNRE students.
- Correspond and work collaboratively with key stakeholders such as faculty, staff, students and other Ross and SNRE units to integrate program and institute efforts.
- Support admissions efforts by engaging prospective students, attending information sessions, hosting prospective students, developing marketing materials, and collaborating with admissions on materials, events, administering financial aid, etc.
- Administer evaluations of program content, effectiveness, and value.
- Manage and coordinate staff and execution for all events (scheduling, facilities, catering, presenters, course materials, etc.)
- Act as liaison and representative to University community, media, sponsoring agencies, vendors, and partner organizations.
- Select, supervise, develop and evaluate assigned staff; establish and model performance expectations and standards to foster a positive, high-service, and innovative culture. Provide leadership for the training and motivation of staff in order to make full use of individual capabilities and to meet the institute's growth and demands.
- Establish and manage the operating budget and external funds. Ensure compliance to budget and all applicable financial policies, procedures and requirements.
- Maintain an effective Strategic Advisory Council and External Advisory Board by managing membership, communications and meeting agendas.
25% Strategic Direction
- Work with the Faculty Director to set the strategic direction including planning, developing, and implementing short and long-range objectives.
- Provide operational leadership support to the Faculty Director and associated faculty in carrying out the mission of the institute.
- Monitor emerging trends, research, student interests, resources and prospects to identify innovative opportunities to enhance the institute. Recommend and work with the Faculty Director to develop new content, workshops, co-curricular activities, case competitions, and other programs (as relevant) to complement and build on the classroom experience.
25% Relationship Management and Marketing
- Build and nurture internal and external relationships with key individuals and organizations to determine how they can best partner with the institute.
- In partnership with Ross Development, identify, establish, and cultivate relationships with potential national and international organizations, alumni, and donors to promote initiatives.
- Conduct presentations to internal and external audiences. Represent the organization at conferences or events.
- Set the strategic direction for all marketing and communications efforts including web presence, effective use of social media, and other vehicles to communicate with internal and external audiences. Ensure optimal positioning of the program, center or institute and promote positive public relations.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or appropriate combination of education and professional experience in delivery of superior services and programs within higher education or the business/corporate community.
- Candidates must have significant and progressive experience (~8 years) in related positions in a complex organization, ideally with experience in higher education.
- Candidates will possess the analytical ability to assess the environment and the competition, anticipate future business needs, and develop creative ideas regarding possible responses.

- Demonstrated managerial and team leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to effectively network and build relationships with various internal and external constituencies
- Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, be able to take initiative, and be resourceful in an environment of constrained resources.
- Candidates must have a proven track record in fiscal management and experience preparing and monitoring budgets.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong public speaking skills; ability to present strong and persuasive oral and written communications and to effectively work with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and database applications, i.e. PeopleSoft (or comparable system).
Desired Qualification:
- MBA or Master's degree in higher education or related field is strongly preferred.
