    Hello, friends,

We are looking for someone to kick off a sustainability summit at Bucknell, an effort supported by our University President and driven by faculty from across the campus including civil engineering, religion, management, environmental studies, electrical engineering, geography, and sociology. Because of our wide range of backgrounds, we define "sustainability" as going beyond concerns about the natural environment, incorporating questions of social justice, economic development, cultural prosperity, and others. Who would you suggest is a speaker who can help us energize the campus around the issues of educating ourselves in order to build a sustainable future?

    Thanks for any suggestions!

    Jamie

Jeana Wirtenberg (jwirtenberg@optonline.net).  She would be phenomenal - motivational, well experienced with real situations.

    Jamie,

Here are a few suggestions, all of whom get at the environment/social justice interconnection:

    - David Morris or someone else from the Institute for Local Self-Reliance in Washington DC

    - Michael Renner, Gary Gardner, or someone else from the Worldwatch Institute in DC

    - Alan Durning, director of the Sightline Institute in Seattle

    - Lester Brown or someone else from the Global Policy Institute in DC

    - Van Jones, who weaves the environmental and social justice areas together well. I think his base of operations is in the SF Bay area, particularly Oakland. He was the Obama appointee who was driven from office in about 2010.

    - Majora Carter, who hosts a show on the Sundance Network and is known for her interdisciplinary sustainability work in the South Bronx

    - Will Allen, a former NBA player who heads up Growing Power, an organic urban agriculture initiative in Milwaukee WI

    - John de Graaf, a filmmaker based in Seattle who produced Affluenza, Buyer Be Fair, and other sustainability oriented documentaries
