  • 1.  Successful industry self-regulatory "cartels"?

    Posted 10-10-2013 14:04

    Colleagues,

Does anyone know of a successful industry agreement to improve performance relative to an environmental problem?  I am thinking of something like the INPO (nuclear power) system for improving safety standards or the Responsible Care (chemical) program to reduce accidents and environmental impact.  Small industry or partially successful examples are of interest too.

    Thanks,

    Andy

    hi andrew et al.,

andrew asks for "successful" industry agreements . . .

my suspicion would be that there are not any industry agreements whose "success" is not highly contested . . .

with that caveat, one such industry agreement is the roundtable for sustainable palm oil in the edible oils industry . . .

    cheers,

    HI Andy,

The Network for Business Sustainability prepared a list of some of the major programs in Canada: http://nbs.net/knowledge/guide-to-industry-level-sustainability-programs/.

As well, there have been some industry level collaborations in Canada that are truly ground breaking (i.e. precompetitive groups), such as the Canadian Oil Sands Innovation Alliance and the Great Bear RainForest Agreement -- you can Google them. We also have the Canadian Boreal Forest Agreement currently being negotiated, but it's not clear yet what the outcomes will be.

As an aside, I do believe there are important country level effects. Whereas firms often use industry level certifications to decouple practice from performance, which you found with Responsible Care in the US, we've had a more positive experience in Canada.

    Good luck with your work.
