    Greetings,

I have a colleague in industry who is beginning to work on a sustainability
planning initiative for the San Diego area. Please email me
(jmillima@uccs.edu) if you know of any sources (articles, books, websites,
etc.) that address sustainability programs/planning activities in cities or
    regional areas.

    Thanks much,

City of Melbourne, in Victoria, Australia has a 'Melbourne 2030' plan.
They won an award in 2001 I think for being onh the way to become a
sustainable city. The then CEO of the City spent some time with me to
explain his sustainability initiatives. Interesting challenges working
with elected coucilors and mayor - a municipality CEO has a great deal
of political effort to get things done (recall the BBC's "Yes Minister"
    TV series).

There is a great deal of sustainability activity in the City of
Melbourne and other suburban cities in the greater Melbourne Area.
Also, the City of Melbourne has been a flagship for the rest of
    Australian municipalities.

If you have specific questions please feel welcome to contact me.

There is a good list of sustainable cities programs on

    http://cleanerproduction.com/Directory/sectors/SustCities.htm

the related Communities page has practical info about cleaner production -
the green biz part of sustainability.

I think most sustainability region planning is growing out of previous
environmental/land use planning programs. At the City level the efforts
seem to be growing out of the environmental management/transportation plans.
So you might include those topics in your area of research.

Perhaps the slow cities movement could give some insights, this emerged
from the slow food movement in Italy, and I am sure if you go to their
website they have a section on slow cities - which is about developing
the city for its citizens first - quality of life become a central
concern, and everything else must follow from that. Some of the
    characteristics include:

    Slow Cities are cities which:

1- Implement an environmental policy designed to maintain and develop
the characteristics of their surrounding area and urban fabric, placing
the onus on recovery and reuse techniques
2- Implement an infrastructural policy which is functional for the
improvement, not the occupation, of the land
3- Promote the use of technologies to improve the quality of the
    environment and the urban fabric

    Dear John!
The Aalborg+10 website might be useful for your colleague, http://www.
