Inquiry regarding Sustainability Centers

  • 1. Inquiry regarding Sustainability Centers

    Posted 10-24-2007 17:25

    Hi All,

    The Aspen Institute's Center for Business Education is compiling and "coding" an all-encompassing list of "sustainability" centers, in an effort to survey the sustainability center world and gain a clear and comprehensive picture of it. We plan on compiling all the data we collect and releasing some form of publication which we'd be happy to share with whoever was interested.

    Could you recommend a handful of centers that we should make a point of including?

    For the sake of clarity – we are considering all sustainability centers, not just ones in MBA programs. We are especially eager to find Center's whose research is applied in nature and who are receiving funding from corporate partners (but will include all recommendations you make); by sustainability, we mean anything related to the environment, in a broad sense. We are not including more traditional ethics / CSR centers in this collection (unless the research and funding model is appropriate), only because the parameters would be too much to manage at this point.

    Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

    Alex Roberts

    Dear Alex,

    We have recently set up a Sustainability and Climate Research Centre at the Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University, NL. In a broad sense, we aim to reach a clearer understanding of the challenges posed by climate change and search for credible solutions to achieving global sustainability.

    Specifically, our goals are to:

    - connect scientists, students and practitioners worldwide in an effort to further our understanding of climate change and its implications for organizations and society;

    - provide a forum for interaction and the exchange of ideas among scholars and policy makers on the best ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change locally, nationally and globally;

    - encourage network building amongst scholars working on climate change and those engaging with other issues of sustainability in order to promote synergy and maximize efforts;

    - provide easily accessible and up-to-date information on cutting-edge research, ideas and works published on the subject of sustainability and climate change.

    We currently have two projects underway; one concerning the EU strategy on biofuels and the other on a local system analysis of the Rijnmond region for the Rotterdam Climate Initiative (connected to the Clinton Climate Initiative)

    Our URL is www.erim.eur.nl/scr; we are currently redesigning the website and we expect to launch it on November 2.

    Of course, we would love to be infromed of your survey results!

    In looking forward to your reply,

    Best wishes,

    Jens Blokland (ERIM Research Assistant)

    Alex:

    I believe The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture (http://www.leopold.iastate.edu/) should be included in your list. Please see their official description which I have pasted below. Their research is very aptly described as applied. They are very active in working with business faculty.

    -Frank Montabon

    The Leopold Center is a research and education center with statewide programs to develop sustainable agricultural practices that are both profitable and conserve natural resources. It was established under the Groundwater Protection Act of 1987 with a three-fold mission:

    ·         to conduct research into the negative impacts of agricultural practices;

    · to assist in developing alternative practices; and

    · to work with ISU Extension to inform the public of Leopold Center findings.

    In 2002, a vision statement was adopted: The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture explores and cultivates alternatives that secure healthier people and landscapes in Iowa and the nation.

    As part of the Center's new orientation, Three focused research initiatives have replaced the more general competitive grants research program. Each of the three research programs -- marketing and food systems, ecology, and policy -- is responsible for its own projects and educational events.

    Dear Alex,

    Here is another sustainability "center" to add to your list. Duke has
    just announced a joint effort between the Nicholas School of the
    Environment and the Fuqua School of Business, The Duke Corporate
    Sustainability Initiative:

    Dear Alex,

    This document is a little out of date but will give you an excellent overview of sustainable development research centres in the UK.

    Hi,

    I just wanted to thank all of you who submitted Centers for inclusion in our data on the sustainability center landscape. I was referred to many centers doing great work that I otherwise would not have found. Over 30 faculty responded with numerous suggestions, and many others expressed interest in seeing the full list once it was assembled.

    Over the next few weeks, the Aspen Institute Center for Business Education will be fixing up the raw data we have to make it more presentable, at which point we hope to distribute the data to any and all interested parties.

    Thanks again,

    Hi All,

    The Aspen Institute's Center for Business Education is compiling

    effort to survey the sustainability center world and gain a clear and
    comprehensive picture of it. We plan on compiling all the data we

    Could you recommend a handful of centers that we should make a
    point of including?

    For the sake of clarity - we are considering all sustainability
    centers, not just ones in MBA programs. We are especially eager to find
    Center's whose research is applied in nature and who are receiving
    funding from corporate partners (but will include all recommendations
    you make); by sustainability, we mean anything related to the
    environment, in a broad sense. We are not including more traditional
    ethics / CSR centers in this collection (unless the research and funding
    model is appropriate), only because the parameters would be too much to
    manage at this point.

    Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

    Alex Roberts
