The Organizations and the Natural Environment (ONE) DivisionCall:  Papers, Symposia, and Caucuses for the 2015 AoM Meetings

The ONE Division is calling for quality academic papers, thought-provoking research symposia, and caucus submissions relevant to this coming year's Academy of Management theme: Opening Governance. As expressed on the Web site:

"Opening Governance, invites members to consider opportunities to improve the effectiveness and creativity of organizations by restructuring systems at the highest organizational levels. The term 'governance' refers to leadership systems, managerial control protocols, property rights, decision rights, and other practices that give organizations their authority and mandates for action."

Papers, research symposia, and caucuses should consider open governance topics in and organizationsinvolving management.  Open methods of governance revolve around new technologies and behaviors - i.e., the use of big data, crowdsourcing, and other emerging digital enhancements - along with behavioral features like enriched decision information, focused attention, broad consultation, multi-implementation targets. These changes have the potential to influence every aspect of the firm, from the arrangement of internal routines and personnel to the way in which it engages stakeholders and manages internationally.

The ONE Division seeks papers, symposia, and caucus proposals that are able to integrate theory and empirics of opening governance with organization and natural environment theory, methods, and findings. The progressive nature of opening governance is in keeping with the underlying emphasis in ONE on social innovation as a mean of furthering sustainability. So we envision a relatively strong fit between our division's research submissions and the opening governance theme.

Submissions for regular paper sessions and symposia both involve the same core product – potential or completed research. However, the session for these products and submission process differ, as discussed athttp://aom.org/annualmeeting/submission/guidelines/ . Below, we briefly summarize some of these relevant details, particularly as they relate to ONE.

For regular paper sessions, a manuscript (40 pages maximum) is submitted to the Academy with relevant divisional audiences (e.g., ONE) indicated by the submitter. Each paper is then reviewed by the primary division and, if accepted for meetings, placed in a relevant session for presentation. Some papers may be of wide interest to the Academy due to their relevance both the theme of opening governance, and multidisciplinary theory. These papers may be submitted directly to the All-Academy Theme sessions, or, alternatively, the Program Chair may nominate them to be presented in this part of the program.  ONE is highly supportive of paper presentations, and we endeavor to put only three papers per session in order to facilitate their presentation and development.

Symposia are pre-packaged sets of papers around issues or topic areas that are designed to be accepted as a group. The symposium submission is essentially a short overview of the session, the products, and the method of presentation (e.g., via panel, individual presenter, and with or without a discussant).  ONE has used symposia successfully in the past and encourages symposia submission for the 2015 AoM.

The final type of submission for the regular (non-PDW portion) of the program is the caucus. As expressed in the AoM 2015 submission guidelines, a caucus is a place "where AOM members with shared interests can discuss common issues and explore potential research collaborations."  As such, a caucus does not require formal papers or panels or presenters. The caucus organizers are simply discussion leaders. In the past, ONE has not used many caucuses. If you wish to submit a caucus proposal, please contact the Program or PDW Chair.

We look forward to receiving your submissions for the 2015 AoM Meetings. The AoM Web site will open at the end of November. The final submission date is January 13, 2015, by 5:00 p.m. EST.

     Thanks!

     The ONE Division
