    Dear all,

I am looking for recent pieces (or key ones) on corporate environmental strategy to incorporate to my Masters level course. I asked a few days ago for syllabi regarding this topic and some of you responded with very useful suggestions.

Specifically I need pieces that address the following:

    a) Why do firms go green?

    and

    b) How can firms go green?

If you have electronic pieces you're willing to share that'd be great.

    Thanks in advance,
    Raul

    Raul,

Hopefully, this paper offers you a new piece: macro perspectives of why firms adopt ISO 14001.

Excellent paper Seong-Gin. Having implemented many management systems for environmental, quality, oh&s etc over the past 20 years I find your paper a most accurate reflection of my expreience. I will pass this on to others.

Also, my novel about the findings of this thesis: http://intergon.net/tsw
The findings of my thesis answer your second question - How can firms go green? - That is, the CEOs of the businesses I studied aligned the culture with the issue of going green. That is the most critical thing to do. How they aligned the culture is explained in my thesis and book.

    Raul,

I've just written a book (due to the publisher in a few weeks) that includes chapters on why firms go green and what firms need to green in order to be ecologically sustainable.  Some of this information also is in my doctoral dissertation, which was completed last year.  In 1997, I wrote a book (The Smart Office) detailing how to green the workplace.  I've also just finished a draft for a third (upcoming) book that looks at the need to move beyond today's green business best practices in order to achieve ecological sustainability, which gets to your "How can firms go green?" question.  I don't know how much information you need but am happy to share what I can.

    Cheers,

    Hi Raul:

Not sure if you're interested in how an NGO used a market strategy to establish demand and ultimately transform an industry, but my colleague Cathy Hartman and I have written several pieces tracing Greenpeace's "Solutions Campaign" to diffuse "Greenfreeze," an ozone- and climate-safe refrigerant in Europe and China.  Using market diffusion and multi-sector coalition perspectives, we show how Greenpeace influenced the market by partnering with, appealing to, and sometimes coercing companies, buyers and other stakeholders and market players.  One piece was published in Business Strategy and the Environment in 2000 (Greenpeace's start in Germany) and another in Business Horizons in the March/April 2003 (Greenpeace's efforts in China).  A piece on Greenpeace's confrontation and eventual collaboration with Coca-Cola and the Sydney Olympics is forthcoming in the Stanford Social Innovation Review.

    Raul,

A piece that I worked on a few years ago that was published in the Journal of Marketing discusses the antecedents to corporate environmentalism and the influence of industry type. This was one of the first empirical studies in this area. I am including the citation (since the pdf file was too large):

Bannerjee, Bobby Subhabrata, Easwar S. Iyer, and Rajiv K. Kashyap (2003), "Corporate Environmentalism: Antecedents and Influence of Industry Type," Journal of Marketing, 61 (April), 106-122.

Just want to give my opinion that Professor Stafford and Hartman's work is terrific. Honest, intriguing, and fresh, it has been an inspiration for me.

    All,

I have a popular film available which has been in distribution for sometime.
It covers specifically how several leading businesses have learned to become
more environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Thousands of
people from around the world have viewed the film. It has been requested from
organizations/people like the EPA, government of Nepal, William McDonough,
    Rocky
Mountain Institute, Williams College, Erasmus University, Middlebury College,
and many other leaders in this field.

The title of the film is "Industrial Systems of Tomorrow: Finding Sustainability
Through Natural Cycles" and you can learn more about it at:

Please do check it out..I would be highly interested to gain everyone's feedback
