| Dear Academic Colleagues: I need your inputs on a brief survey of a proposed PhD program. The Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base is dedicated to defense-focused graduate education, research, and consulting. But the institute recently opened its doors to fee-paying civilian students (on a competitive basis). The Department of Systems and Engineering Management houses graduate programs in Environmental Science & Engineering, Financial Engineering, Enterprise Data Integration, Industrial Hygiene, Research & Development, and Engineering Management. We are considering starting a new interdisciplinary PhD program in "Environmental Sustainability" that will leverage the diversity of intellectual research and excellent research infrastructure available within AFIT and WPAFB. One of our expectations is that such a program will appeal to non-military students. But to justify starting the program, we are conducting a brief market survey. Please HELP by responding to the following questions: 1. Do you feel there is a market for a PhD program in Environmental Sustainability among civilian PhD candidates? 2. Would you recommend the PhD program to your graduate students, recognizing that an AFIT degree could enhance their job marketability? 3. In what other contemporary and emerging areas do you feel a defense institution should offer interdisciplinary PhD programs to civilian students? 4.
