    Research Methods for Sustainability

    SIM-ONE Online Workshops 2026

    Call for Expressions of Interest

Topic 1: Philosophies of transdisciplinarity, complexity, and systems for sustainability research

Following the online Workshop held on this topic on 31 March, we are offering two group mentoring sessions in an online format, as follows:

Tue 21 April 2026, 8:00-9:00 London time (Cristina Neesham, Newcastle University/Swinburne University)

Tue 21 April 2026, 16:00-17:00 GMT (Wendy Chapple, Vienna University of Economics and Business)

These events are part of the project Advancing Sustainability Research through Transdisciplinary, Systems Thinking and Complexity Approaches, and supported by a grant awarded by the Research Committee of the Academy of Management (Strategic Project Fund for Methods Training).

The aim is to guide and mentor PhD students and junior faculty (early-career scholars), to encourage and empower them to explore and develop innovative methodological perspectives on sustainability research. The sessions are open to SIM and ONE members (or prospective members) who are carrying out projects on sustainability topics. Applicants are required to submit a brief proposal (max 2 pages) by Monday, 13 April 2026, explaining their interest in Topic 1. Prospective mentees are expected to briefly outline any work (or work-in-progress) they would like to discuss and receive feedback on during the session on 21 April, and to provide information that indicates their commitment to a career direction in sustainability research. Once accepted, each mentee can be allocated to one session only. Please indicate in your EOI document which of the two online sessions you would prefer to be included in (also taking into account the time zone most suitable to your location).

As places on the mentoring sessions are limited (four mentees per session @ 10-15 mins each), we anticipate the selection to be highly competitive. If you are not selected this time around, please do not be disappointed. The aim of the project (of which the above mentoring sessions are only the start) is to provide as many opportunities as possible for junior scholars to receive feedback and guidance over the next 2-3 years.

The aim of this pilot project is to spur similar initiatives in the following academic years, to attract researchers' interest in exploring new ways of researching sustainability issues.

Following these events, interested participants are invited to join a Sustainability Research Methods Group, which will continue to develop the project further by adding new research training and collaboration resources.

For any general queries related to this project, please contact Cristina Neesham (Project Leader) at cristina.neesham@newcastle.ac.uk or cneesham@swin.edu.au
