Dear Colleagues,
We are excited to invite you to our Professional Development Workshop (PDW) at the Academy of Management 2025 Annual Meeting in Copenhagen, where we explore a high-impact and rapidly growing domain: Extreme Teams.
Teams operating in extreme environments-disaster zones, combat units, space missions, high-stakes healthcare settings-are at the frontier of organizational behavior, yet research in this domain remains fragmented. This PDW aims to bridge methodological and disciplinary divides to spark new collaborations and develop a cohesive research agenda for the field.
What to Expect?
This 2.5-hour session will feature:
🔬 Part 1 – Expert Presentations
Research from an "Extreme Teams" perspective:
- Mara J. Waller (Colorado State U.): Behavioral Observation Methods
- Christopher W. Wiese (Georgia Tech): Historiometry in Extreme Teams
- Jan B. Schmutz (U. of Zurich): Mixed Methods Approaches
Research from an "Extreme Contexts" perspective:
- David A. Buchanan (Cranfield U.): Fiction as Research Evidence
- Derin Kent (Warwick Business School): Ethnographic Approaches
- Norbert Steigenberger (Umeå U.): Video Methods in Extreme Contexts
🧠 Part 2 – Panel Discussion: Bridging Perspectives
Featuring Daniel Geiger (U. of Hamburg), Zhike Lei (International Institute for Management Development), Linda Rouleau (HEC Montréal), M. Travis Maynard (Colorado State U.), and Stephen J. Zaccaro (George Mason U.)
📢 Part 3 – Interactive Roundtable Discussion
Facilitated interdisciplinary small-group discussions to generate integrative research questions across communities of practice, roundtable summaries, Q&A with panelists, and the launch of a multidisciplinary micro-community to sustain momentum post-PDW.
Facilitators include Silja Hartmann (TU Berlin), Andres Käosaar (U. of Central Florida), Elisa Lehrer (European University Viadrina), and Iris Seidemann (U. of Hamburg), and will be accompanied by presenters and panelists.
Why Attend?
This PDW will benefit scholars from multiple divisions who study:
- Team performance in complex and uncertain conditions
- Crisis response, healthcare, military, or space organizations
- Multi-method and multi-level team dynamics
- Interdisciplinary approaches to high-stakes coordination
Whether you're just beginning to explore extreme team research or are already working in the field, this session will offer deep insights, methodological tools, and meaningful networking.
No pre-registration is required: Everyone interested in extreme teams is welcome to attend, but if you are planning to join us, please add the PDW as "Favorite" to allow for better planning here: https://cdmcd.co/Edmy45
