Call for Papers for a Special Issue "Institutional Transitions and Governance Reforms for Sustainability in China" & Paper Development Workshop at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (May 9, 2024)

BACKGROUND
China is at a critical juncture, facing unprecedented environmental challenges and a global imperative for sustainable development. Understanding the complex interplay between institutional changes, governance practices, and sustainability outcomes in China is of pivotal importance. This Special Issue aims to explore the multifaceted dimensions of China's efforts to reconcile economic growth with environmental sustainability, focusing on the dynamic processes and mechanisms through which institutional transitions and governance reforms in driving sustainable development.
AIMS AND SCOPE
By bringing together diverse perspectives and cutting-edge research, this special issue aims to highlight effective strategies and practices that shed light on the complex interplay between China's institutional frameworks, governance practices, and sustainable development objectives. Potential topics for submissions include, but are not limited to:
· The role of governmental and non-governmental organizations critical for the transition in environmental governance.
· New governance models that promote sustainability, including participatory governance, multi-level governance, and transformative governance
· Social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility in the context of sustainability.
· Adaptive governance in response to climate change, including disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation policies, and resilience building.
· Comparative analyses of China's governance reforms with other global practices for sustainability.
Original research articles are welcome. We are particularly interested in studies that offer new theoretical insights, methodological rigor, and practical implications for policymakers and stakeholders.
SPECIAL ISSUE EVENTS
Interested authors are invited to submit a 500-word research proposals (extended abstracts) to a paper development workshop organized by the guest editors and JCG, to be held on May 9, 2024 at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The purpose of the paper development workshop is to provide authors with developmental feedback on their manuscripts and to help them position their manuscripts for possible submission to the special issue of JCG. This in-person workshop will be led by Sujian Guo (JCG Co-Editor-in-Chief), Ning Liu (JCG Guest Editor), Yongdong Shen (JCG Editor), and Xueyong Zhan (JCG Guest Editor). In the PDW, we will match the participants with JCG editors and other senior scholars to provide authors with developmental feedback aimed at improving their manuscripts. Participation in the paper development workshop does not guarantee acceptance of the manuscript in the JCG Special Issue and attendance is not a prerequisite for publication. After the PDW, invited manuscripts should be prepared using the JCG Manuscript Preparation Guidelines and should be submitted via the JCG submission system. All manuscripts will be reviewed according to the JCG double-blind review process.
Interested authors can submit their research proposals (extended abstracts) to Ms. Chen (Email: 0924515@zju.edu.cn) with the subject "JCG PDW 2024" by March 31, 2024. No one should submit more than two research proposals to this PDW, and only one research proposal can be accepted.
Authors will be notified about the status of their submissions by April 10, 2024. For accepted research proposals, authors must submit a preliminary version of their manuscript to the two guest editors by April 30, 2024. Authors attending the PDW will be invited to participate in the 20th Cross-Strait cum Hong Kong and Macao Public Administration Conference, 9-11 May 2024. More details about the PDW and local arrangements will be provided in the acceptance letter.

Journal of Chinese Governance aims to explore the changing state-society relationship and governance practice in China, and offers up-to-date empirical research, theoretical and policy articles on the state governance capacity and modernization, various local models, practices and politics of governance in China. Topics to be covered include China's state governance capacity, governance modernization, local governance, corporate governance, non-profit governance, social governance, policy governance, environmental governance, climate governance, digital governance, health governance, urban governance, civic engagement in public affairs and service delivery, China's engagement in global governance, etc. The journal will publish special issues and research paper. The journal will make a valuable contribution to the understanding of Chinese governance, and stimulate a growing number of international scholars to study Chinese governance from the disciplines of political science, public administration, public policy, sociology, economics, and many other areas. All research articles published in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review. In 2022, the Journal of Chinese Governance impact factor is 3.0, Q2 of JCR category in Public Administration, Q1 of SJR category in Political Science and International Relations.
