Update from the ONE Greening Team

    Dear ONE colleagues,

We, the ONE Greening Team, would like to share great news with you. The Academy of Management has granted us funding from the Strategic Project Fund to support our multiple initiatives to green the conference experience.

With the help of the Strategic Project Fund, we will work collectively on the following key areas during the new year of 2020:

    1. Pilot virtual conferencing during AOM 2020
    2. Organize topic-related social events during AOM 2020
    3. Establish a year-round virtual community on impact creation
    4. Promote the topic of carbon neutrality at AOM and across divisions
    5. Share knowledge and experiences with other AOM divisions and conference organizers

We feel that the time is right to significantly change the Annual Meeting and to address the increasing concerns by members about the environmental impact of large-scale conferences, yet we are aware it is a very ambitious plan. Shall you or anyone you know be willing to volunteer to transform this plan into a change-making process please let us know, which sub-project you are most interested in and eventually how you would like to support it. All support will be greatly appreciated!

Lastly, if you are interested in reducing your own environmental footprint for the upcoming Annual Meeting in Vancouver, please have a look at the ONE Greening Cheat Sheet, which includes great advice to help you plan your trip in a more environmentally friendly way!

    With best wishes,

    Sylvia, Simon, and Valentina

    Travel by Train Initiatives

#OSbyTrain (& byBike) represented in many conferences

Organization and management scholars are increasingly concerned about the impact of their conference travel, and many are keen to find ways to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising attendance. Academics Flying Less has already registered more than 700 academic supporters mainly from the natural sciences; OS4Future, an academic movement, is similarly leading the way in our disciplines. One way to make alternate travel options attractive is to organize pre/post-conference meetings or PDWs on trains to/from the conference. Group travel to conferences and workshops in 2020 is already underway: Please click on the following links: #AOMbyTrain, #EGOSbyTrain, #GRONENbyTrain, #NIWbyTrain, #AESWByTrain. Common travel by bike, bus or car is also an option and is currently in preparation. Check for instance the EGOS website for #EGOSbyBike from Berlin or Lüneburg.

If you wish to organize other similar activities to other conferences or from other origins please contact us at OS4Future.

OS4Future is a movement of organization and management scientists who wish to inspire fellow academics to take action on climate change. We focus on actions that make a concrete impact. We do this on four dimensions: research, teaching, practice, leading by example.

Let's walk the talk. Read our action statement and endorse OS4F. Follow us on Twitter @OS4Future.
