The course "Leadership and Sustainability" (L&S) is part of the sustainability concentration in the Northeastern Online MBA Program, currently ranked eighth internationally by the Financial Times NU MBA students are mature, working professionals who have at least five years of work experience. The role of the L&S instructor is to implement the course under the direction of the lead faculty, who designs the course, meets periodically with students,  and guides the instructor. In 2020, the instructor's commitment is to teach up to two sections of 15-20 students each.

The L&S course immerses students in strong rather than weak sustainability. That is, it focuses on leadership for the planet rather than on leadership for individual companies alone. While students will learn a lot about creating change within their companies, they learn even more about the institutional role of business. Drawing on the social sciences from psychology to economics, students consider what leaders need to know and do to foster collective, systems-wide approaches to climate change and energy evolution. The course draws on the lead professor's book, Lead as If the Planet Matters: Five Practices for Making Better Decisions on Climate and Energy (forthcoming, fall 2020), to lay out the details of this approach. The course material also includes articles, thought leader lectures, and documentaries. The course is well received by students.  Their recent comments include, "I strongly feel a course of this nature should be a requirement as opposed to an elective./This has been one of the most enlightening classes of the program, and has challenged my world view in significant ways./ Life changing."

Candidates must hold a master's or higher degree from an accredited institution. Ideal candidates will be professionally grounded in some aspect of sustainability, such as social science, hard science, practical implementation, or policy,  and they must be interested in broadening their own perspective by learning with and from their students. During the course, the instructor models an interdisciplinary approach. This is accomplished in part by being clear about what one knows and does not know, while being willing and able to learn enough to participate in decision-making with experts. This ability to work across disciplines to achieve practical outcomes is a key characteristic of leaders for planetary sustainability.

Candidates should contact the lead faculty, Dr. Rae André, at r.andre@northeastern.edu. Please include your resumé and one or two paragraphs about yourself.
