Dr. Amanda Cowan, Assistant Professor at the University of Rhode Island, recently passed away. Amanda won the ONE dissertation award in 2014, but never got to publish her work. Her dissertation focused on the collapse of the fisheries off the north-east coast of the US and Canada in the 1980s. It described the interactions of the producers (fishermen and the fish processors), the purchasers of fish (big corporations such as Walmart and Whole Foods, government regulators of the fisheries, and NGOs interested in fish as an at-risk part of the natural environment. She applied a sensemaking perspective to the data she collected herself over about six years in the 2000s, plus a decade's worth of historical data she collected from trade journals, trade conferences proceedings and programs, stories in the popular news media, and her own recorded interviews with leaders in the four constituencies.

Her husband, Jim, would like interested ONE scholars to have access to her hard work. He has asked the library at Oxford University to make her dissertation available at:

Jim has also indexed some of her research and has some original source material. If interested, please contact Jim Cowan at jamesacowan@gmail.com

Hi Jean, is a direct link to the dissertation and other materials available? The link in the post leads to a spreadsheet but not the materials themselves.
