We invite you to participate in the PDW on Social Evaluations and Sustainable Outcomes at the Academy of Management Conference in Boston on Saturday, August 10th from 3:45 PM-5:00 PM (Boston Westin Copley Place, Empire).
The purpose of this PDW is to bring together scholars in the area of social evaluations and sustainability in order to support and propel research in this space. The use of social evaluations such as certifications, labels, rankings, ratings, indices, and information disclosure as tools utilized by various stakeholders to promote, regulate, and evaluate corporate sustainability has proliferated in recent years (Bansal & Hoffman, 2012; Carlos & Lewis, 2018; Chatterji & Toffel, 2010; Delmas & Grant, 2014; Doshi, Dowell, & Toffel, 2013; King & Lenox, 2000; King, Lenox, & Terlaak, 2005; Lee, Hiatt, & Lounsbury, 2017; Lyon & Maxwell, 2011). Despite the growth of these practices and their implications for sustainable outcomes, research in this area remains fragmented with scholars focusing on different aspects of social evaluations, including their origins, strategic implications for firms, and their societal outcomes. We seek to address this fragmentation by bringing together scholars who work in this space in order to better integrate research on this topic and provide deeper insights into whether social evaluations are truly making an impact on sustainability. This workshop will address these issues through a mix of panel presentations by distinguished scholars and interactive paper development discussions with workshop participants.
The first segment of the PDW will feature a panel discussion with leading scholars in the field of social evaluations and sustainable outcomes. All are welcome to attend this portion of the PDW and no registration is required.
Following the panel discussion, will break into small round tables where workshop participants will be able to present short research proposals and receive developmental feedback that can help guide their study design, theoretical development, empirical strategy, and data collection. To participate in the paper development session, we invite applicants to submit a brief (1-2 page) description of a research idea or working project. In your submission, please include your name, title, school affiliation, and your top three choices of panelists you would like to receive feedback from.
