Kate Odziemkowska, Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania

    Overview:

Stakeholders are central to theories of organization and organizational performance. Given the increasing importance of firm-stakeholder relationships in creating both private and public value, a fundamental question in theories of organization is the governance of firm-stakeholder relations. In an era of dwindling trust in business, rising populism and nationalism, coupled with greater involvement of business in social innovation and discourse on social and environmental issues, engaging in this question is more pressing than ever. This symposium brings together scholars from complementary theoretical perspectives to address the question of how firms can create value for society and shareholders alike through their stakeholder governance and engagement. The objective of the symposium is to highlight emergent research and perspectives on stakeholder governance and engagement, and to propose directions for future research.

    Format:

We will open the symposium with a brief introduction to the topic of stakeholder governance, followed by panelists discussing emergent research they are conducting in this space. The latter half of the symposium is dedicated to a moderated discussion of promising new theoretical and empirical directions for the study of stakeholder governance and Q&A with the audience.

We look forward to seeing you in Chicago!
