    Theme: Border Crossing

San Diego, CA, March 21-24, 2019

    Submission Deadline: October 1, 2018

Acceptance of Proposals: December 1, 2018

"I have been nearly all over the world and this is just the prettiest place for a city I ever saw." - Alonzo Erastus Horton, "Father of San Diego"

San Diego is indeed a beautiful place. It is where the first IABS conference was held 30 years ago and many see the city as a gateway to beaches, bays, craft beer, and relaxation. However, San Diego is also seen as a barrier to the United States by many seeking refuge. Just seventeen miles north of the border with Mexico, San Diego and the surrounding areas must balance cultural and political differences; something that is becoming increasingly challenging. The conference theme for 2019 is "Border Crossing" and is an opportunity to reflect broadly on how and where our research does (or does not) involve crossing visible and invisible borders. Possible topics can include but are certainly not limited to:

    • Human Rights
    • The role of business in the migration/refugee crisis
    • Migration policies and practices (in the U.S. and around the world)
    • Migrant worker rights
    • The boundaries between firms and their stakeholders (E.g., manufacturing facilities and their local communities)
    • Impacts of changing trade policies on business
    • The unique stakeholders of border towns
    • Access to education for those without documentation
    • Pedagogies that embrace diversity
    • Cross-disciplinary work that utilizes fields not typically associated with B&S work: marketing, political science, sociology, etc.

Proposals are invited for the following session types:

Discussions: Author(s) share an idea that is in the early to middle stages of development but is not yet paper-ready. [NO AV in these sessions]

Papers: Topics related to business & society using a variety of research paradigms that are closer to completion.

Symposia: Can focus on a particular area of business and society research or on a specific teaching-related topic. [AV available if requested in the submission.]

Workshops: Working meetings that focus on a specific research or teaching challenge. [AV available if requested in the submission.]

Innovative sessions: Activities/experiential exercises that facilitate reflection on the conference theme. [AV available if requested in the submission.]

The conference can't happen without our amazing members and attendees! Please consider joining us, submitting proposals, and signing up to review even if you can't attend. Rooms have been blocked at the Kimpton Hotel Palomar; a boutique hotel located at the entrance to the iconic Gaslamp Quarter of downtown San Diego with a complimentary happy hour in the lobby every evening. You will be close to a variety of restaurants and bars and a quick ride to the beaches and world-famous San Diego Zoo. More information about the conference is available on the IABS site

Can't join us in America's Finest City? Sign up to review and contribute to the program!

For any questions please contact the conference chair, Tara Ceranic Salinas (University of San Diego). We hope to see you in sunny San Diego in March of 2019!

    Apologies for cross-postings.
