    Dear ONE Colleagues,

I invite you to submit your extended abstracts for the upcoming CSSI 2018 Symposium on Cross-Sector Social Interactions occurring in beautiful Copenhagen this June.

You can go to the CSSI 2018 website to find a panel that fits your research: https://cssi2018.com/

I encourage you to submit an extended abstract for consideration as part of a panel that I am part of, as follows:

Panel Title: Collaborative Business Models for a Circular Economy

    Co-Chairs:

Dr. Deborah de Lange, Assistant Professor of Global Management Studies, Ted Rogers School of Management, Ryerson University, Toronto, Canada. Email: debbie.delange@ryerson.ca

Dr. Rumina Dhalla, Associate Professor of Organizational Studies and Sustainable Commerce, Department of Management, College of Business and Economics, University of Guelph. Guelph, Canada. Email: rdhalla@uoguelph.ca

    Description of the Panel:

This panel seeks to attract research papers exploring conceptual, theoretical and practical aspects of collaborative sustainable business models that build an inclusive and robust circular economy. A circular economy is "an economic model wherein planning, resourcing, procurement, production and reprocessing are designed and managed, as both process and output, to maximize ecosystem functioning and human well-being" (Murray, Skene, and Haynes, 2015: 377).  The set of panel papers will represent an exploration focusing on building and strengthening the circular economy through cross-sector partnerships so as to arrive at outcomes beneficial for both business and society, especially in respect of mitigating climate change. Strengthening an inclusive global and sustainable circular economy is supportive of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). More specifically, this panel will focus on positive environmental outcomes especially in line with UN SD Goal Number 13, Climate Action and including related goals such as Goal Number 2, Zero Hunger, Number 6, Clean Water and Sanitation, Goal Number 7, Affordable and Clean Energy, Goal Number 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Goal Number 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, Goal Number 14, Life Below Water, and Goal Number 15, Life on Land.

Explanation of the Panel's Contribution to the Field of Cross-Sector Collaboration Research:

The increasing urgency around addressing the SDGs, especially as related to climate change, is leading to unexpected collaborations among a variety of stakeholders such as civil society, business, government and others. This panel offers contributions to the field of cross-sector collaboration by examining which types and how these types of collaborations may strengthen a global circular economy in alignment with addressing the UN SDGs mentioned above and the Paris Climate Agreement. We need international connections amongst locations and societies on a global scale. Global non-profit, government, and business collaborations can enable a combination of strengths while compensating for weaknesses to arrive at solutions for climate change, a problem that knows no international boundaries. This topic is broad and invites many types of creative research endeavors that focus on building a cooperative circular economy to find solutions and take action on climate change.  We are open to ideas and some illustrative questions that may be addressed by this panel include:

    • How do cross-sector collaborators choose each other and effectively develop or implement circular climate change solutions? What are the business models that will sustain these collaborations such as for smart cities?
    • How can cross-sector actors ensure that the UN SDGs are addressed by circular solutions so as to produce an interconnected national, international or global circular economy? How is a cross-sector governance structure(s) to be designed?
    • How would cross-sector collaborations ensure inclusivity in circular economy solutions as related to mitigating climate change? For example, South nations are bearing the brunt of climate change or within a nation, vulnerable populations may experience the effects more and how can we ensure this does not happen?
    • How could robust and flexible collaborative circular business models be designed to address a multi-dimensional set of issues related to climate change e.g., pollution; species extinction; mass migrations; international peace and security; energy, water and food security; epidemics, etc.?
