Invitation to AOM PDW:
"Exploring Degrowth in Organization Studies: A Multifaceted Lens"
Submission Deadline (Optional): August 01, 2024
We warmly invite you to our PDW on Degrowth in Organization Studies, to be held at the Academy of Management annual meeting in Chicago, on Aug 11 2024 9:00 AM - 11:30 PM at Fairmont in Regent Room. Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking discussion on reimagining growth and its implications for our field. Proposal submission is not mandatory for participation in the general sessions of this PDW.
In the face of pressing social and environmental crises, the role of organizations in both perpetuating and potentially alleviating these challenges has come under increasing scrutiny (Ergene, Banerjee, and Hoffman 2021; Hoffman and Jennings 2015; Nyberg and Wright 2022). Yet, the notion of growth as an inherent good remains largely unchallenged in many of our academic dialogues. Degrowth, which challenges the notion of endless economic expansion and advocates for sustainable use of resources, has yet to be fully embraced in our field's mainstream conversations.
This Professional Development Workshop (PDW) invites you to explore a provocative question: If we take the degrowth conversation seriously and start imagining the re-organization of society as a goal, how can we leverage our expertise and insights? What if the aim is to reduce consumption of natural resources to align with planetary limits while ensuring a sufficient quality of life for all? How might such a reorientation transform our theories and practices?
Join Us to Discuss:
- Rethinking growth and reimagining the foundations of how we organize and manage.
- How organization scholars can facilitate this crucial transition.
- Innovative thinking and theory development to guide society toward its future potentialities (Gümüsay and Reinecke 2022).
We hope this PDW will ignite interest in studying degrowth and inspire you to contribute to a transformative agenda. Your participation will not only enrich this critical conversation but also help you connect with like-minded scholars who are eager to push the boundaries of our field. Let's make degrowth a compelling and impactful topic in management studies.
This PDW has five parts, three of which are open to all, without a need for submission: (I) speaker presentations via online medium, introducing degrowth as a movement and academic conversation; (II) panellist presentations on possibilities and potential for scholarly inquiry around degrowth from their respective lenses and domains of expertise; (III) discussion and audience dialogue; (IV) breakout sessions in which a submission of a research abstract is required. Attendees will be divided into small groups to present and discuss their research ideas with the panellists and the attendees. (V) Panellists will conclude the PDW with a discussion about avenues for future research and efforts to advance the development of degrowth scholarship within organization studies.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Interested participants are welcome to submit a 500-word abstract to nikikhor@ualberta.ca in a single file (pdf or docx) by August 1, 2024. The research abstract may engage with degrowth-related topics including but not limited to ideas around:
· What role can organization scholars assume for themselves in challenging the taken-for-grantedness of growth?
· What theoretical pathways might be suitable for engaging with degrowth research?
· What empirical setting might be relevant for exploring the connection between degrowth and organization studies?
Scholars at all stages of academic careers are invited and we welcome proposals at all levels—early-stage and advanced.
We will select submissions based on the fit with the PDW and quality and will follow up with an accept/reject decision by August 5. Please note that as with all AOM program activities, submitting your application implies a commitment to attend and participate in the break-out sessions if accepted. Please note that proposal submission is not mandatory for participation in the general sessions of this PDW. Please add it to your favorites at AOM 2024, if you plan to attend.
We look forward to seeing you in person at the PDW!
