Together with you, we would like to better understand how innovation across industry boundaries can support sustainability goals. Sophie Führer, Jenni Kaipainen, and Lucas Miehé are chairing a track on "Innovating Beyond Boundaries: Transforming Industry Architectures through Sector Coupling and Ecosystem towards Sustainability" at the R&D Management Conference in Pisa, Italy, from 30 June to 2 July 2025.
In Track 1.3, we welcome submissions extending our understanding of how innovation occurs beyond industry boundaries towards greater sustainability. We believe that innovation towards sustainability transforms industry architectures and reshapes ecosystems for value creation. While the context should focus on innovation beyond firm boundaries for sustainability efforts, potential research questions include but are not limited to:
- How and why does technological change (i.e., new paradigms and/or new routines and procedures) occur when actors pursue innovations for sector coupling?
- How and why do firms change their practices and routines through by adopting sector coupling innovations?
- How and why do established ecosystems transform due to sector coupling innovations?
- How and why do industries converge by adopting sector coupling as a concept?
- How and why is the industry architecture transforming when (adjacent or disjunct) industries converge?
Submit your 1,000-word abstract by 1 February 2025. We look forward to your contribution and to hosting a session with passionate and rigorous scholars exploring these topics.
