Background: This Special Issue aims to deepen our understanding of social movements' roles in shaping alternative futures. Social movements drive organizational and societal transformations, creating more democratic, egalitarian, and ecological practices. However, authoritarian movements are also on the rise, promoting their visions of the future. Our goal is to explore how social movements mobilize towards alternative futures, balancing "desirable" and "undesirable" outcomes.

Aims & Scope: We seek papers that bridge social movement research with temporality and future-making. Possible topics include prefigurative organizing, moralizing work in future-making, authoritarian movements, unintended consequences, and the role of emotions in shaping futures.

    Key Dates:

    • Pre-submission Events: EGOS 2025: PDW on Social Movements and Organizing Desirable Futures and a sub-theme on The Future of Activism.
    • Post-submission Event: Revision workshop in Spring 2026.

    Submission Process:

    • Prepare manuscripts using JMS Manuscript Preparation Guidelines: JMS Guidelines
    • Submit via JMS ScholarOne: Submit Here
    • Articles will undergo JMS's double-blind review process.
