    Dear ONE community,

In a recent study my co-authors and I found that there is a substantial body of climate change-related research published by management/business academics in journals OUTSIDE the management disciplines (i.e. management, accounting, finance, operations, etc.).

Those findings made me wonder: what journals OUTSIDE the management disciplines is the ONE community reading to stay current and informed about environmental sustainability and climate change research that has relevance for managers and firms?

A few titles appeared frequently in my own keyword-based searches for climate change / climate action research that has relevance to management:

    • Journal of Cleaner Production
    • Sustainability
    • Journal of Industrial Ecology
    • Nature Climate Change
    • Nature Sustainability
    • Global Environmental Change – Human and Policy Dimensions

Are there any favourite journals missing from that list? Which outlets are, in your experience, perhaps NOT worth looking into (e.g. because of low average article quality, or articles being too "technical"/natural science-focused to be useful for a social scientist)?

I'd be most grateful for your advice.

    Thanks!
    Franz

    Hello Franz,

Congratulations on the AMP article, which looks great.

Over and above the journals already noted, I just wanted to mention "Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development," at which I am one of the editors. This is a scholarly magazine, which means we seek to publish synoptic articles and commentaries for a broader audience than specialist journals (but it still has a decent impact factor). We've featured some pieces by ONE colleagues, including for example Andy Hoffman, and the current issue features among other things some commentaries on the Dasgupta Review by Gretchen Daily and others, including my UCT GSB colleague Camille Meyer. I'd be happy to chat to any ONE members who may be interested in submitting something. The website / current issue is available here.

    Cheers
    Ralph

Thanks Ralph, great to hear from you and thank you for the recommendation.  ...I would have sent you a separate email to elicit your views if you hadn't response to the forum so quickly! 😊
It's terrific that you are supporting efforts to translate sustainability research to a broader audience. Kudos! We need more of that.
    Best wishes

    Dear Franz,

I would suggest to add PNAS and Environmental Research Letters to your list.

As an aside, your list will dramatically change based on the pathway to climate change you choose to focus on. For example, your current list looks comprehensive from a carbon management perspective but not so much from an ecosystems health perspective.

    Thanks Johan. Very useful.
I'll share our findings regarding these journals' thematic coverage of management-related topics when we've done the analyses.

    Greeting to beautiful Switzerland!

On a weekly basis Science typically has articles spanning sustainability, climate change, relevant policies, along with the pandemic, current topics and other really interesting studies. It's publisher, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) member community discussion lists are also good places for generating and contributing to aspects of climate change and sustainability.
