Virtual Paper Development Session: Studying Paradox & Social Issues

    Tuesday, May 25, 2021

    Call for extended abstracts

Grand social challenges are defined as large-scale, complex, enduring problems, with a strong social component, which often exit across multiple levels of society. Management scholars (and related disciplines) have taken interest in how to better understand and tackle grand societal challenges such as mass displacement and migration, endemic poverty, social or gender inequality or exclusion, social isolation, and, most recently, social implications of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Prior work has established that tackling social challenges requires a coordinated and collaborative effort from across sectors but, acknowledges that cross-sector collaborations are often rife with managerial and organizational tensions of their own.

Paradox theory offers a relevant novel lens to understand both the tensions underpinning salient social issues and, sheds new light on the multifaceted efforts required to resolve them. In response, we are organizing a virtual paper development session to support researchers studying social/societal issues and paradox.

We invite you to submit an extended abstract of your paper (ca. 1.000 words) on social issues and paradox. Topics include but are not limited to: specific social tensions or challenges, paradox and social impact, paradox and societal change, and, methods for understanding multilevel or cross-sectoral paradox in the social context.  We especially encourage PhD students and junior scholars to submit.

Deadline for abstracts: Tuesday 1st May 2021

We will host two separate sessions to allow for attendance from different time zones.

We hope you can join us!
