    Detailed Job Description

    The Golisano Institute for Sustainability at the Rochester Institute of Technology (Rochester, NY) invites applications for a tenured position of Sustainability Department Head at the rank of Associate or Full Professor of Sustainability. 
     
    The primary responsibilities of this position will be leadership and administration of the Sustainability Department. These responsibilities include representing the program to internal and external audiences, supporting the education and research activities of approximately 50 M.S. and Ph.D. students, overseeing the academic faculty, managing the department budget, and contributing to strategic planning with the Institute for Sustainability leadership team. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated record of and commitment to academic or professional service and leadership and a strong desire to focus on leading, growing, and promoting the Sustainability Department.
     
    The Department Head will maintain an active research program. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated record in securing external funding, mentoring M.S. and Ph.D. students, and publishing peer-reviewed, scholarly research.  Preferred research areas include sustainable manufacturing; recycling; food, energy, water systems; and urban systems and the built environment. Preference will be given to candidates with experience working in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment. The ideal candidate will have a research record or trajectory that complements but does not significantly overlap the research thrusts of current Sustainability faculty.
     
    The Department Head will teach one graduate core course each year. Core courses include Fundamentals of Sustainability Science, Industrial Ecology, Risk Analysis, Economics of Sustainability, and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis.

    Department/College Description

    The Golisano Institute for Sustainability (GIS) at Rochester Institute of Technology is a leader in sustainability education and research.  The Institute is currently staffed by seven academic faculty, seven research faculty, and over 60 professional staff scientists, engineers and administrative support personnel.  Degrees offered include Master of Architecture, M.S. in Sustainable Systems, and Ph.D. in Sustainability. These programs are led by multidisciplinary faculty who collaborate with organizations locally, nationally, and internationally to create solutions to complex sustainability challenges. GIS also recognizes and is committed to the value of a diverse graduate student community, with strong recruitment and enrollment of female and underrepresented students. The flagship of GIS is the LEED platinum-certified Sustainability Hall, a $38 million, 84,000 ft2 facility dedicated to the GIS academic program.  The building serves as a center for sustainability research, technology transfer, education and outreach, and provides a state-of-the-art showcase for green construction and design. It incorporates a "smart" microgrid and a variety of sustainable technologies, including a 400 kW phosphoric acid fuel cell, 40 kW photovoltaic array, geothermal wells, and a green roof with rainwater harvesting.
